Week 9- January 18th-25th
"“Let your mind start a journey thru a strange new world. Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you where you long to be...Close your eyes let your spirit start to soar, and you'll live as you've never lived before.”-Eric Shumm
TPACK- T-Technology (digital computer, software and the skills to operate it)
P-Pedagogy (the art of teaching/methods)
A-AND (the "center" of the 3 combined concepts; the inter-relatedness)
C-Content (subject matter)
K-Knowledge (What are we learning?)
TPACK (research done by: Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koehler) is a very simple, yet very complex to explain! Here goes my best effort from my understanding through the readings ...
The TPACK framework is grounded in an understanding that quality teaching and learning do not occur when the three knowledge bases exist separately, but that meaningful and engaged learning happens when there is an interplay and relationship between the three. The following figure depicts the basis of TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy, Content, Knowledge).
True technology integration is a thoughtful approach in which teachers understand how to relate concepts with technologies, demonstrate creative pedagogical practice, and facilitate technology use in ways to teach content and skills with a student centered approach. Good teaching practice must include all three concepts and an understanding of how content and technology inter-relate. The basis of the this theory is that teaching in general is very complex including student knowledge, thinking and learning, and teacher knowledge of subject matter. Where does technology fit in?
New technologies have changed the whole make-up of the classroom and is here to stay. Knowledge is now more accessible and are constantly evolving. Teachers will have to become "iguana-like" constantly changing skin to meet the demands that technology integration brings. This is very different thinking from content and knowledge that have basically been stable standards in the classrooms. Therefore, having basic technology skills for teachers is as important as having content knowledge.
Technology adds a third level to the wheel of knowledge because it brings its own problems in relations with content and knowledge. Teaches have to be able to use the technological tools as well as create new strategies to meet the needs of the content. "Productive technology integration in teaching needs to consider all three issues not in isolation, but rather within the complex relationships in the system defined by the three key elements". I believe that TPACK is used by all teachers on a daily baisis because teachers are always reconfiguring their classrooms from strategies, to resources, to the interenet. Technology has actually changed the ways in which teachers teach because we have "instant access" and we are "distance learners" as well. On-line courses have had to adjust to meet the needs of not being "face-to-face" creating and adapting discussion boards, blogs, etc. Technology and its skills have to be included in our process of content and teaching knowledge it can not be left alone.
Basically, TPACK is not a new way of thinking for teachers, but adds the technology component into the method of teaching the subject matter. "Knowing how to use technology is not the same as knowing how to teach with it". Teacher preparation has to include teaching with technological tools through "learning by doing". Learners, young and old, have to engage in the process of working with the tools in order to apply it to the real world. Teachers then become a learner and a practitioner as well in the classroom.
TPACK
I definitely believe that TPACK should be used in the classrooms. Technology is no longer a thing of the past and all students need to view it as a resource just like a pencil. Teachers need to allow students more control and allow them to help us! ... I have found in my tech classes that students know shortcuts and troubleshooting sometimes better than me. Let them experiment ... they will not break anything:)
The following videos add humor to the topic of TPACK!: Video 1 Video 2
Gap Analysis for Fostoria Middle School:
1. Students need access to WEB 2.0 tools to proceed in our district. Blocks and technology restrictions are preventing our district from moving forward with 21st Century Skills.
2. Professional Development needs to include the basics of Word Processing, SmartBoard, and Web 2.0 Trainings.
3. Computer Applications need to be taught at a younger level starting in the elementary schools.
